Kurandza ⎮ Mozambique

Kurandza 'a learning center in Mozambique’ was a Archstorming competition in which Studio C Tubman took part and won 2nd prize out of 417 submissions. The competition was a fun and challenging experience for our team.

Kurandza ♥︎ We Stand for Girls
Kurandza's core values are integrity, responsibility, perseverance, community, joyful gratitude, and love. Drawing inspiration from these values we designed a center that feels open, inclusive, and safe, where the girls are free to learn, explore, and play.

SCT Design Scope: Architecture Competition

Project size: 420 sqm space allocation, total 2100 sqm plot

Client: Kurandza

The design goal was to connect the interior and exterior spaces in order to blur the lines between architecture and nature, study and play. A great deal of thought and consideration went into the orientation of the building and placement of rooms in relation to prevailing winds and the suns’ path over the plot.

Welcome to our world of dynamic and interactive learning. Our design proposal offers a free flowing and flexible layout with realistic architectural details and construction methods.

The project consists of several freestanding structures connected under a zig-zagging roof structure built around a main courtyard and two smaller courtyards (phase 2). All three courtyards offer ample seating between the steps and perches against the walls between the columns. To the left you find the covered patio, which can be used for recreation or outdoor learning.

We believe that planting plays a huge role in sustainability, offering shade and helping to rebalance the environment. As such all removed fruit trees will be replanted along the side & back of the property. A decent sized vegetable garden and chicken coop also provide food for the center.
